BREMERTON, Wash. (NNS) -- USS George Washington (CVN 73), the nation's only forward deployed naval forces (FDNF) aircraft carrier, completed its first selected restricted availability (SRA) on schedule in Yokosuka, Japan, May 7.

This was the first large maintenance period conducted on a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier outside of the United States.

"Great job on this first SRA by the combined ship's force, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance (PSNS&IMF) and Ship Repair Facility Yokosuka team," said Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Commander Vice Adm. Kevin McCoy.

PSNS&IMF, a NAVSEA field activity, led this project as the naval supervising authority sending approximately 650 carrier maintenance personnel to accomplish this four-month repair period. PSNS & IMF Project Superintendent, Dirk Close, led the project team.

The integration of the various maintenance providers was key to a timely completion of this SRA.

The work package of approximately 200,000 man-days was divided between multiple maintenance providers, PSNS&IMF performed 70,000 man days in the propulsion plants. Ship Repair Facility-Japan Regional Maintenance Center (JRF-JRMC) and its prime contractor performed 93,000 man days of flight deck, catapults, auxiliary and modernization work. The George Washington crew completed 30,000 man days of repair work.

NAVSEA develops, delivers, and maintains ships and systems on time, on cost for the United States Navy. NAVSEA is committed to fiscal responsibility and streamlining our maintenance and modernization processes to maintain current readiness at a lower cost.
