Media: US Soldier in Iraq Kills Fellow Soldiers

By VOA News
11 May 2009

U.S. media quote an American military source as saying a U.S. soldier has shot and killed at least four of his fellow soldiers at a U.S. base in Baghdad.

A brief military statement earlier said that five U.S. soldiers were killed Monday at the U.S. base Camp Liberty in the Iraqi capital.

The military provided few details, but said an investigation is underway.

It was not immediately clear if the alleged gunman was among the dead.

Also Monday, Iraqi police say a senior officer was assassinated in a drive-by shooting in Baghdad.

Officials say unknown gunmen shot Abdul Hussein Mohsen al-Kadhemi as he drove through the center of the capital.

This is the second attack on a high-ranking police officer in recent days. On Saturday, an Iraqi police general was fatally shot near the southern city of Basra.

Iraq has seen a recent upsurge in violence. April was one of the deadliest months in the last year, with a reported 355 Iraqis killed.

On Sunday in Baghdad, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Iraq and the United States will need to improve intelligence gathering in preparation for an American troop withdrawal.

During her one-day unannounced visit, Pelosi said Iraq will need a strong U.S. intelligence presence once there is a diminished military presence.

U.S. forces are set to withdraw from Iraqi cities by the end of next month.

U.S. President Barack Obama has pledged to have all American combat troops leave Iraq by the end of August 2010.
