WASHINGTON (NNS) -- In his most recent podcast, the chief of naval personnel, discussed the Career Intermission Pilot Program (CIPP). He stressed that Sailors interested in taking one to three years off active duty should apply now.
"The most important piece is for Sailors and officers to be aware that it is available to them and that they should now begin to plan for the future," said Vice Adm. Mark Ferguson.
The selection board meets May 27, and packages are being accepted through May 15, to allow as many Sailors as possible to take advantage of this innovative opportunity.
A career intermission may be used for a multitude of personal or professional reasons ranging from pursuing additional education to starting a family or caring for an ailing loved one.
CIPP spots are available to all enlisted and officer specialties, with 40 total enrollments (20 officers and 20 enlisted Sailors) available for calendar year 2009. Participants will temporarily transition to the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), while retaining full active-duty TRICARE health benefits for themselves and their dependents and are entitled to a monthly stipend of one-fifteenth of their basic pay.
"We view this as critical to our strategic future," said Ferguson. "Flexing to meet the needs of Sailors allows them to take some time off to pursue interests outside the Navy, and then come back fully competitive for the next phase of their Navy career."
To ensure Sailors remain competitive, year groups and service entry dates will be adjusted to match returning CIPP participants with like-experienced Sailors for advancement.
