Afghan Governor Says Security Forces Kill 25 Insurgents
By VOA News
05 May 2009
A provincial governor in western Afghanistan says security forces backed by Western warplanes battled insurgents Tuesday after Taliban fighters publicly executed three civilians.
Farah provincial governor Rohul Amin said the fighting has killed at least 25 insurgents.
There also are reports that militants took refuge in civilian homes during the clashes. It is not clear if any civilians were killed.
Earlier Tuesday, Taliban militants publicly shot dead three people, accusing them of working for the government.
Afghanistan recently has been suffering from a worsening Taliban insurgency since a U.S.-backed invasion ousted the Taliban in late 2001.
Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
