Nepal PM resigns

New Delhi, May 4, IRNA -- Nepal's Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda resigned Monday afternoon following controversy over removal of Army Chief General Rookmangud Katawal.
According media reports, addressing a press conference in Kathmandu, he said President Ram Baran Yadav's directive to Army chief to continue in office was unconstitutional. He added that he favors resolving the issue peacefully.
Prachanda had earlier sacked the army chief accusing him of defying the government's order on various issues.
Meanwhile, Nepal's President Dr Ram Baran Yadav sent a letter to the Army Chief General Rookmangud Katawal asking him to continue in his office.
The president took the decision after receiving official request from 18 political parties at his office on Sunday evening including main opposition Nepali Congress to protect constitution and block action against the Army chief.
Meanwhile, protests continued today as well supporting and opposing the government decision to sack army chief Rookmangud Katawal.
Protesters burnt tires and obstructed traffic at Tri Chandra campus disrupting traffic at Ratna Park and Durbar Marg.
The District Administration Office (DAO) Kathmandu Monday imposed prohibitory orders in some areas of Kathmandu.
The areas include president's residence in Shital Niwas and army headquarters and its surrounding areas.
All types of protests have been banned in and around these areas. Security personnel have also been posted at campuses in large numbers to avoid any untoward incident.
