SOUDA BAY, Greece (NNS) -- Sailors from various countries conducted fast-roping exercises from a Greek SH-60 Seahawk helicopter and a MH-60 Seahawk helicopter assigned to USS Mt. Whitney (LCC 20) during Phoenix Express 2009 (PE09).
"This is something we do often, so performing these types of drills is very important," said Turkish Cmdr. Turhan Ecevit. "Seeing the differences between militaries and how we each conduct helicopter exercises is also something I have enjoyed and found to be helpful."
Throughout the day, 93 participants from United States, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia performed hovering and fast-roping movements.
"This exercise is an excellent way to help all the countries involved learn from each other as well as learn to work together," said Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 2nd Class (AW) Marcus Monreal, attached to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 28.
Participants were divided into small teams and repeated both hovering and fast-rope exercises four times.
"It is important for us to stay proficient at visit, board, search, and seizure techniques, so having [an] opportunity to show others our capabilities while refreshing our skills is a great opportunity," said Monreal.
