DONGHAE, Republic of Korea (NNS) -- Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89) arrived in Donghae, Republic of Korea (ROK) for a scheduled port visit April 30.
"This visit emphasizes the continued cooperation between the United States and the Republic of Korea, and gives the crew a great opportunity to experience Korea culture and Donghae in particular," said Cmdr. James T. Jones, Mustin's commanding officer.
While in Donghae Sailors will have the opportunity to go on several sightseeing tours and participate in a community service project at a senior citizens home.
"Community service projects are important in providing an opportunity for us to work with our hosts to achieve a common goal while simultaneously giving us an opportunity to thank them for their gracious hospitality," Jones said. "It is also incredibly rewarding to make a positive impact on the lives of others."
The port visit helps to strengthen ties with the Korean people.
"We just want to make sure that our allies in the Republic of Korea know that we are there to support them, and it's also a good opportunity to meet the Korean people and build a stronger relationship with them," said Mustin Command Master Chief (SW/AW) Rachel C. Costello.
Following the port visitMustin will be participating in routine training with ROK Navy.
"Our Sailors benefit greatly from port visits such as this one, and we learn much from other nations," Jones said. "The opportunity to experience the culture and history of another nation broadens our Sailors' perspective and makes us better world citizens."
Mustin is one of seven Arleigh Burke-class destroyers assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15, and operates out of Yokosuka, Japan.
