India asks LTTE to surrender and come to negotiating table

New Delhi, April 29, IRNA -- India has asked Sri Lankan rebels, LTTE to surrender and come to the negotiating table.

India's Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said the the peace process should start in Sri Lanka following the halt of combat operations in the north.

He asked Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief V Prabhakaran and his aides to surrender and come to the negotiating table to resolve the ethnic conflict, Chidamabaram said while speaking on a TV program.

Asked about India's demand that Prabhakaran be arrested and extradited, he said, he did not think that the question arose at this stage.

Meanwhile, India has stepped up its humanitarian assistance for Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka.

Another shipment is being sent with food, medicines and other essential supplies that can last for three weeks. This will be part of the 100 crore (one billion) rupee grant for relief and rehabilitation of civilians who have been evacuated from the conflict zone.

India also proposes to send more doctors and expand the 100-bed hospital in Vavuniya.
