NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 that was signed into law by President Obama on Feb. 17 will provide approximately $17 million in Military Construction and $40 million in Operations and Maintenance projects at three Marine Corps installations.
The installations are Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River, and MCAS Cherry Point.
ARRA is intended to help the U.S. economy recover in the wake of the economic downturn by funding infrastructure and facilities upgrades and repairs, and energy projects.
The Officer In Charge of Construction Marine Corps Installations East (OICC MCI EAST), located at MCB Camp Lejeune, is the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) responsible for construction award and execution of ARRA projects at Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River.
On April 14, 2009, OICC MCI East awarded a contract to replace MCAS New River Steam Systems at Buildings AS100, AS4000, AS4035 and AS236 to Military & Federal Construction Company, Inc., a local small business construction firm from Jacksonville, N.C., in the amount of $663,000. The project will include the replacement of existing above-ground steam and condensate lines and provide new gas fired boilers.
"As a result of this ARRA contract, the base will receive the benefit of increased efficiency of building steam systems while reducing energy costs and providing better facility support and quality of life for personnel at MCAS New River," said Cmdr. Cheryl Hansen, commanding officer, OICC MCI East, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. "This project, as well as those that will follow under this plan, will provide much needed funding and jobs into the local economy. Future ARRA projects at MCI East bases in North Carolina will include major contracts for the interior and exterior renovation of buildings, energy, lighting, mechanical and HVAC systems upgrades, and roof replacements."
