10 rebels killed as Lankan Navy thwarts suicide attack by Sea Tigers

New Delhi, April 16, IRNA -- It has been a lull before the storm. The ‘holiday truce’ period has given way to fresh offensive with reports of infiltration bid by the LTTE Sea Tigers off the Mullaithivu coast.
“Two Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide boats filled with C-4 explosives tried to approach the coastline, which was successfully thwarted by the Sri Lankan Navy”, All India Radio (AIR) reported, quoting navy sources.
The fierce sea battle saw at least 10 Sea Tigers being killed. The Navy successfully destroyed one boat and captured the other. Bodies of three rebels have been recovered. Military Spokesperson said that although the troops are positioned around the ‘no-fire-zone’ but they have not entered the area yet.
He said that they are only closely ‘observing’ the movement of the Tamil Tigers, However, the pro LTTE sources have charged the Army for resuming the offensive as the suspension of hostilities ended at midnight and that at least 180 civilians were killed by military rockets and artillery fire on Wednesday morning.
