IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Kabul, April 15, IRNA – Mehdi Kazemi, an official with the Afghan counter-narcotics police said Wednesday that Kabul welcomed Tehran’s readiness to train the Afghan anti-drugs police, cooperate in providing border security and fight against the international drugs mafia.

Speaking to IRNA, the official said that boosting of Tehran-Kabul cooperation in the field of anti-drugs campaign would serve the entire region and promote regional and international stability and security.

The Afghan official expressed hope that necessary agreements would be signed in near future by Iranian and Afghan officials regarding bilateral cooperation in anti-drugs campaign.

Iran’s Police chief Brigadier General Esmaeil Ahmadi Moqaddam has recently voiced the country’s readiness to cooperate with Afghanistan’s counter-narcotics police by providing training courses for the Afghan policemen.

Afghanistan tops the world’s major 20 narcotics producers supplying over 90 percent of world heroin.

Afghanistan earned an estimated four billion dollars from illegal drugs trade in 2008. Out of the total, some 500 million dollars was the share of the anti-government armed insurgents while 25 percent of the remaining money was given to the poppy farmers and the rest was the share given to the international mafia.

According to Ahmadi Moqaddam, out of Afghanistan’s 7,700 tons of poppy products in 2008, some 3,000 tons had entered Iran.
