NORFOLK (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic, awarded a contract April 6 for approximately $1.7 million, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to Pipeline Industrial Group of Virginia Beach, Va., to replace freight and passenger elevators at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
"The elevator replacements will improve the working life of more than seventy military and civilian employees," said Cmdr. Scott Hinton, public works officer. "By returning these elevators to operational use, operating expenses will diminish as personnel will no longer continue to make do with work-arounds, lost time waiting for an elevator and moving material additional distances to reach an operating elevator."
The contractor will gut the shaft for elevators 37 (freight) and 40 (passenger) and install new elevators. The elevators will be replaced in their entirety. This includes the elevator cab, doors, platforms, guide rails and their supports, hoisting ropes and machine room equipment.
This project, as well as those that will follow under this plan, are intended to bring more jobs to the contractor community, contribute to a more energy efficient infrastructure and provide improvements to Navy facilities while improving quality of life for Sailors and their families.
As an integral part of the NAVFAC enterprise, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic manages the planning, design and construction of shore facilities for the U.S. Navy from Maine to North Carolina.
