NORFOLK (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), Mid-Atlantic, awarded a contract for approximately $500,000 April 3 to Hampton Roads Mechanical Contractors Inc. of Chesapeake, Va., to replace the underground steam distribution system on Naval Station Norfolk.

"This is the first contract to be executed by NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic with funding from the President's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009," said Capt. David M. Boone, commanding officer, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic.

"This is the first of many NAVFAC projects that will be funded through the ARRA, bringing more jobs to our contractor community, contributing to a more energy efficient infrastructure and providing much needed improvements to Navy facilities while increasing the quality of life for Sailors and their families."

The contractor will demolish the existing underground steam distribution system, including steam piping, valves, vaults, drip tee stations and steam traps and replace it with new, more efficient materials. Incidental work includes replacement of asphalt roadways and concrete sidewalks affected by the project. Work is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2009.

As an integral part of the NAVFAC enterprise, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic manages the planning, design, and construction of shore facilities for the U.S. Navy from Maine to North Carolina.
