Germany reaffirms support for Mideast peace amid Lieberman remarks

Berlin, April 3, IRNA - Germany reiterated its support for a two-state solution in the Mideast amid the latest statements by new Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who said his country was no longer committed to the internationally-endorsed Annapolis peace process.
"Our stance is clear. There is no alternative to a two-state solution," deputy government spokesperson, Thomas Steg, said in remarks to media representatives in Berlin on Friday.
He stressed Liebermann was merely voicing his own view on the issue of the Middle East peace process.
"We are waiting to know "the official line" of the new Israeli government," Steg said.
Germany, along with the US and the European Union, wanted to see a re-starting of peace talks as outlined by the Annapolis declaration, according to the German official.
Berlin has been an ardent supporter of Israel and Chancellor Angela Merkel is widely perceived as the most pro-Israeli chancellor in the history of post-World War II Germany.
Most Germans oppose what the government terms as a "special responsibility" towards Israel as a result of Nazi-era mass crimes against Jews.
Germany strongly backed Israel's recent savage military assault on Gaza, killing and wounding thousands of Palestinian civilians, among them mostly women and children.
