BDR carnage plot to plunge Bangladesh into civil war: PM

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New Delhi, March 28, IRNA -- Last month's bloody BDR mutiny was an abortive attempt to plunge Bangladesh into a 'civil war' and foil people's verdict in the last parliamentary polls, Premier Sheikh Hasina has said, warning that the 'conspirators' were still active.

"The mutiny was staged as part of a plot to push the country into civil war foiling the peoples mandate... But it failed," she told a function in Dhaka as a high-powered probe committee is expected to submit its report in next three days.

The 'conspirators' were still active and 'they will strike again', Hasina warned, asking people to remain vigilant as the government orders intensified security vigilance, PTI reported.

Security and political analysts were examining several conspiracy theories in the carnage that came less than two month's after a landmark election installed Hasina's Awami League government which took several crucial and sensitive decisions angering different influential groups.

"The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) mutiny came as the government planned to revive the stalled 1975 murder trial of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, try 1971 war criminals, launched a massive anti-militant campaign... and decided to return (ULFA leader) Anup Chetia," former ambassador and political analyst Harunur Rashid said.

The investigators earlier hinted outsiders' involvement in the massacre in which 57 army officers serving the paramilitary BDR were killed.
