NORFOLK, VA (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet hosted the 2009 Surface Electronic Warfare Symposium at Naval Station Norfolk, March 24-25.

During the two-day long symposium, Sailors were encouraged to ask questions, speak with the detailer, meet important figures in their department and participate in interactive briefs on the ever-changing field of electronic warfare.

Vice Adm. Mel Williams Jr., commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet, provided the symposium opening remarks.

"It's a privilege to have you here learning more about what we can do in the area of electronic warfare," said Williams. "This is important as we continue to synchronize non-lethal and lethal warfighting capabilities within the fleet in support of missions performed by our Sailors and Marines."

The symposium was intended to bring awareness to electronic warfare watchstanders on issues that affect the cryptologic technician rating and electronic warfare mission.

While at the symposium, Williams discussed the importance of maintaining situational awareness in the electronic warfare field and how fleet Sailors help to achieve that mission.

"Maintaining alignment of strategic to tactical objectives and effects is critical in the electronic warfare area," said Williams.

Master Chief Cryptologic Technician Greg Villagomez, Commander, 2nd Fleet's electronic warfare officer and master of ceremonies of the symposium, spoke about the benefits of the conference to young Sailors who attended.

"I never had an opportunity to go to one of these events when I was coming up in the Navy," said Villagomez. "It's a great chance for young cryptologic technicians to meet up with the detailer and senior leadership to learn more about the direction our rate is going and the technology we will be using in the future."

The last symposium the commander of 2nd Fleet hosted was in May 2007 at Naval Station Norfolk with more than 150 participants. This year's symposium hosted more than 300 Sailors and officers from around the fleet.
