German chancellor rejects global NATO role
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, March 26, IRNA - German Chancellor Angela Merkel here Thursday dismissed calls for a global role of NATO ahead of next week's summit of the western military alliance.
Addressing the German Parliament, Merkel said, "I don't see a global NATO."
The military pact has to focus "primarily" on ensuring the security of the NATO member states, the German leader stressed.
Merkel called for a new strategic NATO concept which would also chart out the limited spheres of the western military alliance.
The upcoming NATO summit, co-hosted by Germany and France, is expected to dwell on the future strategy of the military pact.
Earlier this month, Berlin was the scene of a two-day conference on the future vision of NATO.
