SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The Department of Defense announced a list of Navy construction and technology projects March 20 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) that will provide direct economic benefit to communities in the Southwestern part of the country.

ARRA is intended to stimulate economic growth by creating jobs, particularly in infrastructure improvement projects and through expanded energy research and green technology efforts. The total ARRA package includes $787 billion across all government agencies.

Navy projects in California and Nevada include programs that will improve quality of life for Sailors and their families, improve medical care and treatment opportunities, improve and expand environmental and sustainability programs and modernize infrastructure. Other branches of the service will also expend funds under ARRA with a total Defense Department allocation across the country of $7.4 billion. Each of these projects will begin once necessary planning functions are completed and appropriate contracting mechanisms are put in place. ARRA funds will be expended by Sept. 10, 2010.

"We are proud of the Navy's longstanding partnerships with our friends and neighbors in the communities that surround our bases and support our Sailors," said Rear Adm. Len Hering, commander, Navy Region Southwest.

"ARRA is an excellent opportunity for both the Navy and our civilian partners to further extend the already significant economic impact that our partnership has in this region."

He further noted that in the San Diego region alone the annual economic impact of the military is almost $25 billion.

Navy ARRA projects in the Southwest region include more than $806 million in California, more than $9 million in Nevada, and an additional $56.6 million in energy and sustainability efforts across the region.

The San Diego County area alone will receive more than $758 million in ARRA expenditures beyond current Navy economic contributions.
