EADS Defence & Security is awarded licence for civil use of MSSR 2000 I secondary radar by German air traffic control organisation DFS
# Only air traffic control radar certified for military and civil use
# Better aircraft position data increase safety in air traffic
19 March 2009
The MSSR 2000 I secondary radar from EADS Defence & Security (DS) has been licensed for use in civil air traffic control following an exhaustive certification process by the German air traffic control organisation DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH. The equipment is already in operation with a large number of armed forces as an identification friend or foe (IFF) system. This current certification means that the MSSR 2000 I is the world’s only ATC radar system that can be used for both military and civil air traffic control.
“Certification in accordance with DFS’ high safety standards provides us with the basis for introducing a new generation of air traffic control systems,” explains Bernd Wenzler, CEO of Defence Electronics, an integrated activity of EADS Defence & Security.
DFS confirms that the equipment even complies with the latest regulations laid down for ground radars by the European Union and the European organisation for the safety of air navigation, EUROCONTROL. The MSSR 2000 I can operate in accordance with both the latest military Mode 5 and civil Mode S standards, which guarantees a significant increase in the reliability of aircraft guidance by improving existing air traffic control processes.
The equipment provides an overview of aircraft positions based on queries and responses transmitted to and from the aircraft in partially encrypted form. This increases the amount of flight position information available, which results in a significant improvement in air traffic control and in the efficient use of air space. The MSSR 2000 I is the first secondary radar of its type that uses a combination of active Mode S queries and passive ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast) responses. It is the latter that in particular contain details on an aircraft’s position.
MSSR 2000 I systems are already being employed on board German naval vessels of the type F122, F123, K130 and S143a in order to ensure military air traffic control and to prevent inadvertent friendly attack. Moreover, these systems are also being used by the navies of France, Finland and Norway as well as – in combination with air defence and air traffic control radars – in such countries as Germany, Portugal, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Malaysia, Slovakia and the Philippines.
Defence Electronics is an integrated activity of EADS Defence & Security (DS). DS is a systems solutions provider for armed forces and civil security worldwide. Its portfolio ranges from sensors and secure networks through missiles to aircraft and UAVs as well as global security, service and support solutions. In 2008, DS – with around 23,000 employees – achieved revenues of € 5.7 billion. EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2008, EADS generated revenues of € 43.3 billion and employed a workforce of about 118,000.
