SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the opening of a newly renovated Jones Hall Bachelor Quarters (BQ), aboard the Submarine Base Complex of Naval Base Point Loma in March.

The $4.2 million renovation project is one of five major Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) construction and renovation projects to support the BRAC-directed transfer of the Mine Countermeasure Force from Ingleside, Texas to San Diego.

"The Mine Countermeasure move from Ingleside, Texas will bring hundreds of new Sailors to San Diego who are in need of housing. I think it is fitting that this project is the first to be completed, emphasizing the Navy"s commitment to the finest Sailors in the world," said Rear Adm. Frank Drennan, commander, Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command.

Jones Hall, originally built in 1988, is an eight story, 56,664 square-foot housing unit for enlisted personnel. Double occupancy rooms, 140 in all, were completely renovated and refurnished, with the focus on quality of life for Sailors.

NBPL was recently recognized with the coveted "Crystal" award bestowed upon installations with the highest customer satisfaction ratings for bachelor housing.

"The addition of the newly renovated Jones Hall will significantly enhance Naval Base Point Loma's capability to provide top notch living quarters to Sailors based in the San Diego metro area," said Capt. Paul Marconi, NBPL commanding officer.

Renovating existing infrastructure, not currently being utilized, enabled the Navy to save an excess of $25 million in new construction costs for the five BRAC construction/renovation projects associated with this BRAC directed move of the Mine Countermeasure Force to San Diego.

Sincere gratitude was relayed to Harper Construction Company for their dedication and hard work, completing this project ahead of schedule.

"The real people we should thank are the many outstanding Sailors who volunteer to make up the greatest Navy and military force in the world", said Ronald Harper Sr., Chairman and Founder of Harper Construction.

Harper Construction has completed more than $2.5 billion in projects for local Navy and Marine Corps bases.

BRAC 2005 directives call for the Mine Countermeasure Force including six, Avenger Class, mine countermeasures ships to relocate Sept. 30.
