SANTA RITA Guam (NNS) -- Boat owners can feel more secure with their property when U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40 completes a tie-down pad at Sumay Cove in Santa Rita.
The Seabees started the construction project in January.
"It's going good," said Steelworker 2nd Class (SCW) Derek Willard, who is overseeing the project on-site.
"We pull out in August so we expect to get it done, hopefully before our end date."
The 240-feet long and 40-feet wide pad will have 20 separate lots with embedded tie-down anchors for boat storage and surrounding that, will be gravel pavement.
"We're trying to get about a six-inch thickened edge, including at the very least four inches of compacted rock," said Willard.
The work continues daily but there have been a few challenges in digging through the ground because it is made of mostly hardened coral. Willard noted they are also keeping safety as a top priority as they look out for unexploded ordnance and any environmental concerns.
"We just had one of our pieces of equipment break down getting through this," said Willard. "It's pretty rough. We blew a few tires out here too because the coral's sharp."
To maintain stability for the boats that will eventually be tied there, the Seabees plan to place the lot anchors two feet down into the ground.
"In the next couple weeks, we should definitely start laying down some concrete," said Willard. "June ninth is our expected end date."
