Turkish Warplanes Strike Kurdish Rebels in Iraq

By VOA News
13 March 2009

Turkish military officials said warplanes have hit Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq.

A Turkish military spokesman, Brigadier General Metin Gurak, said the attack took place Thursday in the Zap region, near the border with Turkey.

The security chief of Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government, Jebar Yawar, confirmed the strike to VOA's Kurdish Service. He said Friday he saw no indication the action was a precursor to a larger campaign.

Turkish forces frequently target supporters of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.

Turkey has waged a campaign against Kurdish militants in Iraq for over a year, including coordinated ground and air offensives.

The Turkish parliament approved the cross-border raids in 2007 and renewed the mission for another year in October.
