Tsvangirai Says Wife's Death Was 'Accident'

By VOA News
09 March 2009

Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai says the road collision that killed his wife and injured him was an accident.

Mr. Tsvangirai spoke to reporters at his home in the capital, Harare, on Monday, soon after returning from a brief hospital stay in Botswana.

He said the possibility of foul play was slim, saying the chance of that was "one in a thousand."

Mr. Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change party is planning a farewell ceremony for the prime minister's wife, Susan, in Harare on Tuesday. Her funeral is set for Wednesday.

Susan Tsvangirai was killed when a foreign aid truck hit the prime minister's car outside the capital on Friday, flipping it over several times.

The driver of the truck is due to appear in court Monday to face charges of culpable homicide.

A joint U.S.-British AIDS project owns the truck. Britain has called the tragedy a "genuine accident."

Zimbabwe police are investigating the crash, and the prime minister's party is planning its own probe to rule out any foul play.

Mr. Tsvangirai formed a power-sharing government with President Robert Mugabe last month.

The men were under intense pressure from regional leaders to end Zimbabwe's political crisis, stemming from violence-marred elections last year.
