Zimbabwe Prime Minister Tsvangirai Injured, Wife Killed in Auto Accident

By VOA News
06 March 2009

Zimbabwe's main opposition party said the wife of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has been killed and the prime minister injured in a car accident.

A spokesman for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change said a car carrying Mr. Tsvangirai, his wife, Susan, an aide and a driver collided with a truck Friday as the prime minister was driving about 50 kilometers south of the capital, Harare. They said Mrs. Tsvangirai died at the scene.

In a television interview, MDC spokesman Nelson Chamisa would not confirm that Susan Tsvangirai had died and would only say that the accident was serious and that Mr. Tsvangirai's condition was stable.

The condition of the other passengers in the car is not known. They are all in a hospital in Harare.

MDC sources said Mr. Tsvangirai was traveling to a rally scheduled for Saturday at the time of the accident.

Mr. Mugabe and Mr. Tsvangirai joined forces in a power-sharing government last month under intense pressure from regional leaders to end the nation's political crisis.

The men and their parties continue to have strained relations over police arrests of human rights and opposition activists.
