GULFPORT, Miss. (NNS) -- Progress is being made on the new 56,600-square-foot fitness center at Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, and the ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for early November.
"It's time to get fit," says Michele Shaffer, NCBC Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program director. "How does one get in the best physical shape? We believe fitness and weight maintenance depend on a total approach."
The new center will have two, regulation basketball courts, two, state-of-the-art racquetball courts, steam and sauna rooms, breakout rooms for small classes, a heated, outdoor pool, and a cardio and strength training area.
"The facility will be outfitted with new equipment, including more than 70 units of cardio equipment, all with individual television monitors," said Construction Manager, Resident Officer in Charge of Construction Gulfport Jerry Davis. The facility will hold more than 2,500 occupants at any one time participating in aerobics, floor sports and swimming.
Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast awarded the $22 million contract to Yates Construction out of Philadelphia, Miss., in July.
The construction is scheduled to be completed in September with outfitting of equipment to follow.
