U.S. Secretary of Hillary Clinton has reaffirmed American support for Kosovo as it seeks to build a democratic multi-ethnic state in the Balkans.
She spoke after talks Thursday at the State Department with Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu and Prime Minister Hashim Thaci. Clinton praised Kosovo's leaders for what she called their calm, reasoned and careful approach in dealing with its neighbors.
Clinton also said the United States will work with Kosovo in trying to help the country resolve any challenge it may face. She pledged U.S. assistance in helping Kosovo gain wider international recognition.
Both Kosovo leaders thanked the secretary for the assistance the United States has shown their country.
President Sejdiu reaffirmed his country's determination to have Kosovo become a strong multi-ethnic democracy. Prime Minister Thaci reiterated Kosovo's hopes for gaining International Monetary Fund and World Bank membership.
Fifty-five countries have recognized Kosovo's independence, including the majority of European Union and NATO members.
Serbia and traditional ally Russia refuse to recognize Kosovo's declaration.
