B'desh PM grants amnesty to BDR jawans as 9 hr standoff ends

New Delhi, Feb 26, IRNA --A nine-hour high drama of gun battle at the Bangladesh Rifles(BDR) Headquarters in Dhaka ended on Wednesday evening after Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina declared a general amnesty for the revolting BDR soldiers and assured to meet their demands in phases.
The BDR mutineers had agreed to surrender their arms after a meeting with the Prime Minister at her official residence on Wednesday evening, All India Radio (AIR) reported quoting Bangladesh’s State Minister for Local Government, Jahangir Kabir Nanak.
A fierce gun battle broke out at Bangladesh Rifles Headquarters in Pilkhana area on Wednesday morning after a mutiny by the BDR soldiers against their high officers, killing at least 4 and injuring 15 people.
The BDR jawans were demanding that they should have their own officers, instead of army deputed officers as their controlling officers. Over few hundreds rounds of firing are reported.
All the army vehicles in the BDR Hq. were burnt.
Over 10,000 BDR rebellion forces have captured their Headquarters and gheraoed the officers. They have also captured Rifles Market in their control along with many people inside. Army helicopters were hovering the area. Army has taken control over the whole area.
The 15 injured have been taken to Dhaka Medical College. Now the situation is becoming normal.
