Top Pakistani, Afghan Diplomats Visit Washington

By VOA News
24 February 2009

Top diplomats for Pakistan and Afghanistan are in Washington for talks with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The discussions are expected to focus on U.S. policy in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border regions, where the United States believes terrorists linked to the Taliban and al-Qaida are based.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi will meet with Clinton Tuesday.

On Thursday, Clinton will meet with Afghan Foreign Minister Rangeen Dadfar Spanta as well as Pakistan's Qureshi.

The U.S. special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, who recently toured the countries also will take part in the talks.

On Monday, the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Robert Mueller, said militants in the border regions pose the greatest terror threat to the United States.

U.S. President Barack Obama last week approved the deployment of an additional 17,000 troops to Afghanistan to battle militants. He also is conducting a policy review of the region.
