India offers assistance to Lanka for evacuation of IDPs

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New Delhi, Feb 24, IRNA – While offering assistance to Sri Lanka for the evacuation of the internally displaced persons (IDPs), India on Tuesday said that the sanctity of the safe zones must be respected by Sri Lankan forces and the LTTE for the evacuation of the IDPs.

“India is ready to provide all necessary help to facilitate the process of bringing innocent civilians to safety and to meet their humanitarian needs for relief materials, medicines and medical care”, said a statement issued by the External Affairs Ministry spokesman in New Delhi.

The statement said that modalities are being worked out with the Sri Lankan government to arrange for early dispatch of medical help and medicine to reach the sick and injured civilians.

It also appealed to the Sri Lankan Government and all concerned to work out credible ways for the evacuation of IDPs in view of LTTE's willingness to discuss international appeals to allow the people caught in the zone of conflict to leave the area for safety.

The statement said this could include overseeing of the movement of the IDPs by international agencies.

The spokesman urged all concerned to make it possible for much larger numbers to be brought out both over land and by sea as small numbers of medical evacuees have been brought out of the conflict zone for the last few days by sea.
