KEYPORT, WASH. (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) concluded a three-day trip Feb. 18 to Navy Region Northwest during which he visited Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) field activities.
Adm. Gary Roughead visited Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS&IMF) and Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Keyport.
While at PSNS&IMF, Roughead commented on the scope and breadth of NAVSEA's support.
"The availabilities you conduct in San Diego are huge, but I'm also very familiar with what you are doing for the first time on [USS] George Washington. The move of that aircraft carrier in the Western Pacific for our nation and for the region is absolutely critical. When I look at everything that you're doing, just the magnitude of it is significant," said Roughead.
Capt. Stephen Iwanowicz, commander of NUWC Keyport, briefed the CNO on Keyport's forward presence in providing technical capabilities, services, and products to the fleet.
Roughead also expressed interest in NUWC Keyport's range of infrastructure, technology advancement, torpedo production and recruitment. Keyport's leadership also provided input on how to improve the Navy's position in acquisition and technology applications.
The CNO discussed the viability of unmanned underwater vehicles and remote operated vehicle programs.
"We believe we have a large future role in test & evaluation and maintenance for these types of vehicle," said NUWC Keyport division technical director James VanAntwerp.
NAVSEA is comprised of 52,000 civilian and military personnel in 33 activities located across the United States and Asia. Together, the NAVSEA team develops, delivers and maintains ships and systems on time, on cost for the United States Navy.
