India voices 'concern' over Pakistan deal with Taliban
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
New Delhi, Feb 20, IRNA – Voicing concern over the deal between Pakistan army and Taliban in Swat region, India Friday said: "The deal has added to India's "worries" over the security scenario in the region."
This new development, in a way, adds to our worries," said India's Defence Minister, A K Antony on the sidelines of an award ceremony for best marching contingents at this year's Republic Day parade.
Antony said the government's stand on the issue was already cleared by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on February 17, who said: "The fact of the matter is that Taliban is a terrorist organisation. Taliban believes in nothing but destruction and violence. In my assessment, Taliban is a danger to humanity and civilisation."
Last year, Pakistani forces launched an offensive to recapture the Swat valley from Taliban forces but the area remains restive.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has hailed the agreement as the best way to defuse a bloody insurgency in the violence-wracked northwest.
