Thales and DMO get top honours for naval communications

18 February 2009

The SEA 1442 Phase 3 - Maritime Communications Modernisation - Detailed Design project was recognised for the strong commitment from Thales and the DMO to deliver innovative capability to the ADF on time and on budget.

Also recognised for his outstanding achievements was Aidan Morgan, a Thales software architect from Western Australia, who won the Australian Industry Defence Network (AIDN) Young Achiever of the Year Award. Aidan, who joined Thales in 2002 to work on the mission planning system for the Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter, currently directs a team of 25 working on the AIR 9000 Multi Role Helicopter project.

Chris Jenkins, managing director of Thales Australia, said both awards underlined the key strength of Thales in successfully undertaking complex systems integration projects. "I'd like to congratulate the Thales / DMO team on their achievement - they are great examples of people working closely together to deliver solutions to the ADF in effective, cooperative ways."

SEA 1442 Phase 3 involves the introduction of an Internet Protocol (IP) based Maritime Tactical Wide Area Network (MTWAN) into the Royal Australian Navy, in support of the ADF's Network Centric Warfare concept. It will provide the foundation for future maritime communication systems integration and implementation.

"Thales's innovative solution involves an integrated IP-based digital environment, interfacing with the RAN's existing analogue system. This low-risk approach provides future-proofing through the use of off the shelf components, and reduces through life support costs," Jenkins said.

"This project shows the ability of Thales to take world-leading technology and tailor a solution suited to the particular needs of Australian customers, often involving complex systems integration challenges.

"In this country Thales has unique resources well suited to naval communications projects. Not only do we have highly-skilled engineering teams, but also supporting facilities such as our Network Enabled Warfare Laboratory (NEWLab) and the Australian Transformation and Innovation Centre (ATiC)."

In winning the award, the Thales / DMO team was also acknowledged for the participants' extensive teamwork and cooperation, willingness to openly discuss and resolve issues early, and their ongoing involvement of all Defence stakeholders.

Jenkins also congratulated the Young Achiever of the Year, Aidan Morgan. "Aidan is a shining example of great talent at work in this industry.

"Dedicated and driven, he excels in the development and use of agile software development techniques. The processes that Aidan has introduced have dramatically reduced our defect rates and increased the reliability of our software. He is a shining star in the Thales team and he's truly deserving of this recognition from his peers."

Since winning the Thales Young Achiever Award in 2004, Aidan has had several papers published, presented at industry seminars and conferences, and recently begun his PhD thesis.
