DCNS explores computer simulated evacuation mission with UXV support

18 Feb 2009

At a French joint forces seminar held in Paris from 26 to 30 January, DCNS presented a computer simulation of a mission scenario for the maritime evacuation of civilians using UXVs* in three support roles.

The two main aims of the simulation study were to demonstrate the benefits of UXVs (aka drones) in a civilian evacuation scenario and evaluate the new DirectSim simulation environment developed by French defence procurement agency DGA.

The scenario was defined to be representative of an actual evacuation mission using UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) for maritime surveillance and USVs and UUVs (unmanned surface and underwater vehicles) for mine hunting and neutralisation, respectively.

The simulation demonstrated that UXVs offer significant advantages over conventional solutions, including reduced risk for crews and civilians, faster evacuation and more efficient use of available resources.

The study also confirmed the benefits of DirectSim’s robust, scalable, state-of-the-art host framework for this type of work. Indeed, DirectSim is now DCNS’s prime simulation environment for technical/operational studies involving UXVs.

Computer simulation studies are used increasingly to iteratively test and refine preliminary design phase concepts and trade-offs. They also help DCNS to ensure that its solutions match the customer’s operational needs more closely than ever.
