Eighth UK soldier killed in Afghanistan this year

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, Feb 17, IRNA -- British casualties in Afghanistan continue to mount with the Ministry of Defense (MoD) announcing Tuesday the death of another UK soldier in Helmand province.

The soldier from Battalion The Rifles died from wounds sustained as a result of enemy fire during a joint UK and Afghan National Army foot patrol to dominate ground in the district of Nawa, south of Lashkar Gah, the MoD said.

The latest death bring the total number of British troops killed in Afghanistan in the first six weeks of this year to eight and to 145 since the UK joined the US in overthrowing the Taleban regime back in 2001.

All but five have been killed since British troops were deployed in Helmand in 2006, when the number of death grew to 31. By last year, it increased to 51.
