US national security advisor concedes mistakes in Afghanistan

Berlin, Feb 8, IRNA - The new US national security advisor James L. Jones acknowledged publicly for the first time that his country had made mistakes in Afghanistan.
Talking at the 45th Munich Security Conference on Sunday, Jones said, NATO recognized the scope of the problems in the whole region too late.
He added NATO was also too late in pressing ahead with rebuilding the Afghan police and judicial system.
"International coordination was spotty at best," said Jones, pointing out international efforts dwelt too much on military and reconstruction and ignored to address law enforcement and judicial issues, such as police training and combating narcotics.
The former US general pointed also to the lack of success in fighting drugs in Afghanistan.
"The problems in Afghanistan are not confined to one country, it's a regional problem set." the top Obama advisor stressed.
European allies, notably Germany have lambasted the US for focusing too much on the military aspect in Afghanistan instead of civilian reconstruction efforts.
