Indonesian, US navies conclude joint exercise

Kuala Lumpur, Feb 6, IRNA -- The Indonesian naval frogmen squad (Kopaska) and the US Navy Seal concluded a month-long joint exercise.
According to the Indonesia's news agency (Antara), chief of the Indonesian Navy's Eastern Fleet Command, Rear Admiral Lili Supramono, in his speech to mark the conclusion of the exercise at the command's headquarters in Dermaga Ujung, Surabaya, said the exercise was aimed at increasing the capability and professionalism of Kopaska members in anticipating various threats from home or abroad.
"The exercise is a form of policy and cooperation between the Indonesian and US governments in themilitary field.
In view of that the program has a positive aspect particularly with regard to increasing professionalism in anticipation of various threats," he said.
Lili hoped the exercise could be made into a program and continued with an increasing variety of exercise materials based upon principles of mutual respect and benefit.
"With professional soldiers and sophisticated equipment the task of the Navy in safeguarding the country's sovereignty as well as integrity and respect especially in the sea against any kind of harrassment, crimes and potential as well as factual threats from home and abroad would be able to be carried out well," he said.
In the exercise code-named "Flash Iron 09-01" the Kopaska fielded four teams or 28 personnel while the US Navy Seal 15 personnel.
The Eastern Fleet Command also deployed a warship, a Bell helicopter, two Sea Riders and five rubber boats in the exercise held in Madura Strait, the Banongan Beach and the Selogiri beach in Banyuwangi, East Java.
