Suspected militants torch more trucks in Pakistan
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, Feb. 5, IRNA -- Suspected militants torched eight trucks in the Pakistani Khyber tribal region after delivering supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan, officials said Wednesday.
The trucks were parked at a terminal at Sultan Khel area of Khyber Agency when attacked by the militants late last night, they said.
No one was injured in the incident.
Officials said that the militants fired rockets at the trucks.
NATO supplies trucks are regularly targeted in the area by the militants and around 300 military vehicles and containers were set on fire in December in Peshawar.
The attack came a day after militants blew up a bridge on main highway, connecting the Afghan capital Kabul and Peshawar. Supply for NATO forces was disrupted after the bridge was partially destroyed.
The security forces launched a major offensive against the militants last month to secure the route but two attacks in less than 24 hours have exposed the security arrangements for the NATO supply containers.
Some 70 per cent supplies are passed through Pakistan into Afghanistan for the NATO forces.
The attacks have forced the U.S to reach agreement with Russia and Central Asian states for alternate route.
Pakistani and Afghan Taliban have on several occasions warned the truckers not to carry supplies for NATO forces.
Meanwhile unidentified armed men attacked a fort of security forces at Landi Kotal area in Khyber Agency, locals said.
They said the security forces returned fire, prompting exchange of fire for several hours.
There was no report of any casualty.
