Friendly fire incident leaves 19 injured in Thai military drills

29/01/2009 10:10 MOSCOW, January 29 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 19 soldiers have been injured in a friendly fire incident during military exercises in Thailand, The Nation news portal said on Thursday.

During the exercise at the Lop Pur military base in central Thailand, some 20 soldiers were being taken by helicopter to launch an attack on an enemy base. A second helicopter was supposed to provide covering fire for the troops as they made their attack.

"The soldiers were supposed to run to their destination while another helicopter was supposed to fire at the enemies to cover them," the agency said. "However, the friendly fire from the helicopter hit the soldiers."

The injured have been taken to a local hospital, four of them are in serious condition.
