At least 16 militants killed in clashes in Afghanistan
20/01/2009 15:55 KABUL, January 20 (RIA Novosti) - At least 16 militants were killed Monday evening in the Afghan village of Takab during a NATO operation against Taliban militants, a spokesman for the Kapisa province told journalists on Tuesday.
Abdul Alim Ayar said that Taliban militants had been killed during the fighting, including one of their field commanders, Mullah Patang.
A spokesman for the opposition party, the Islamic Party of Afghanistan (IPA), Kari Mansur, claimed that 16 French soldiers from NATO's anti-terrorist contingent had been killed in the attacks. Mansur also said that two IPA militants had died.
The Taliban has made no comment on casualty numbers.
Last year was the worst for violence in Afghanistan since the overthrow of the Islamic Taliban movement in 2001, with the south of the country the worst affected.
