SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- As part of a CNO-mandated Navy Warehouse Transfer (NWT) initiative, Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) Puget Sound will begin transferring civilian employees at its Naval Station Everett detachment "as is, where is" Jan. 18 to Defense Distribution Depot Puget Sound Washington (DDPW).
"This initiative will transfer the Navy's consumer, retail and other shore-based warehousing from Naval Supply Systems Command to Defense Logistics Agency in the Pacific Northwest with a goal of streamlining the infrastructure and leaning business processes," said Randy Golonka, FISC Puget Sounds' executive director.
"FISC Puget Sound will continue to serve as the logistics face-to-the-customer, and DLA will perform warehouse receiving, issuing, packing and kitting operations," said Capt. Stephen Shapro, FISC Puget Sounds' commanding officer.
The NWT initiative contributes to the CNO's objective to reduce our infrastructure footprint while moving the Navy towards a more corporate, enterprise-focused strategy for these critical logistics support functions. The elimination of unnecessary infrastructure costs will ultimately free up resources that can be used to improve warfighting readiness.
FISCPS is the second command under COMFISCS to transfer its warehouse function to DLA. FISC Sigonella transferred the warehouse function at its Bahrain site in mid December 2008 to the Defense Distribution Depot Kuwait, Southwest Asia.
The transfer of Navy warehouse operations under the cognizance of COMFISCS will continue throughout calendar year 2009.
DLA and the Navy are working together to smooth the transition for realigned employees, while ensuring continuity of service to warfighters.
COMFISCS provides an array of integrated global logistics and contracting services to Navy and Joint operational units across all warfare enterprises.
COMFISCS is responsible for facilitating best business practices and efficiencies across the seven FISCs located in San Diego; Norfolk; Jacksonville, Fla.; Yokosuka, Japan; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Bremerton (Puget Sound), Wash.; and Sigonella, Italy; and for optimizing the performance of base supply functions and standardizing levels of service across 13 regions and 79 Navy installations.
COMFISCS comprises more than 7,500 military and civilian logistics professionals, operating as a single cohesive team providing global logistics services from nearly 135 locations worldwide.
