Israel hits Gaza City with artillery, taking tolls on civilians
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Gaza City, Jan 5, IRNA -- Israeli artillery and tanks have targeted Gaza City taking tolls on civilians as the Hamas fighters shot down an Israeli helicopter and set ablaze seven tanks moving into the city.
Among the dead was a family of seven killed by an Israeli air strike in a refugee camp east of Gaza City, IRNA reporter in Gaza City said.
Fighting between Israeli tanks and the resistance forces is going around Beit Hanoun and Jabaliya on Monday, and Gaza city itself - a little further south.
Hamas said its forces have killed and captured several Israeli soldiers from inside armor vehicles.
United Nations declared an alarming humanitarian situation in Gaza and called for opening the road for convoys of trucks to carry food and fuel supplies.
For the people of Gaza, living conditions are deteriorating sharply. Supplies of fuel, food, water, and wheat are said to be running desperately low, UN Relief Works Agency for Palestinians said.
Christopher Gunness, spokesman for UNRWA, told IRNA that food was urgently
needed and people were facing "serious hunger", with supplies for just 48 hours.
