Explosions Rock Kosovo

By VOA News
03 January 2009

Police in Kosovo say explosions and protests have rocked the ethnically divided northern city of Mitrovica in the latest bout of ethnic unrest triggered by the stabbing of a Serb man earlier this week.

The first explosion happened Friday outside a cafe in the Serb-dominated northern part of the city, damaging cars but causing no injuries.

It was followed by a detonation early Saturday morning, wounding six people, including firefighters putting out a blaze in the nearby Bosnjacka Mahala district of the city.

Earlier this week, police said protesting Serbs burned down several Albanian-owned shops.

A spokesman said police and NATO-led peacekeepers stepped up their presence in the area after Tuesday's stabbing and violence that followed.

Officers arrested two young ethnic Albanians following the stabbing. The French news agency, AFP, reports that both have been released after questioning, and the victim is out of danger.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
