- UN Report Says Sudanese Security Unlawfully Fired on Refugees in Darfur VOA 25 Jan 2009 -- The United Nations says Sudanese security forces unlawfully fired into a crowd of thousands of internally displaced people in a camp in Darfur last August, killing dozens of people and wounding more than one-hundred. A report released by the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights and the U.N./African Union Mission in Darfur accuses the Sudanese troops of having violated international human rights law.
- Sri Lanka Says Last Rebel Stronghold Captured VOA 25 Jan 2009 -- Sri Lanka's army chief says troops have captured the Tamil Tigers' last urban stronghold and confined the rebels to a stretch of jungle in the northeast.
- Congo Seeks Extradition of Rebel Leader From Rwanda VOA 25 Jan 2009 -- The Democratic Republic of Congo has called for the extradition of rebel leader Laurent Nkunda who was arrested late Thursday in neighboring Rwanda.
- Somalia Suicide Attack Misses Peacekeepers, Kills Civilians VOA 25 Jan 2009 -- A suicide bomb attack aimed at African Union peacekeepers in Somalia has missed its target and instead killed at least 14 people and injured more than 20 others in the capital, Mogadishu. The African Union condemned the attack as an attempt to undermine the hint of stability that has come to Somalia since Ethiopian troops pulled out of Mogadishu this month.
