YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Rear Adm. Kevin M. Donegan assumed command of the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group, Task Force 70, Task Force 75 and Carrier Strike Group 5 from Rear Adm. Richard B. Wren during a change of command ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) Dec. 17.
During th eceremony, Rear Adm. Kevin M. Donegan relieved Rear Adm. Richard B. Wren. Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet Vice Adm. John M. Bird was the guest speaker.
Bird spoke about Wren's role in upholding a strong alliance between the U.S. and Japan, most importantly involving USS George Washington's (CVN 73) safe arrival in September.
"His leadership role in the final planning and execution stages [of bringing the ship to Japan] was impressive and represents a milestone not only for the United States Navy, but more importantly, the U.S. and Japanese alliance," said Bird. "The magnitude of the planning required to do this task correctly is exhausting, yet Adm. Wren aggressively took on the challenge and nothing was short of amazing."
While Wren's orders have changed, he will stay in Japan to serve as Commander, Naval Forces Japan.
Bird said he is confident Wren would continue to build a stronger, more cohesive maritime relationship with our Japanese partners.
Wren also spoke of the importance of the two maritime forces' unique partnership.
"It has been a source of great pride to witness the alliance between our navies mature professionally," he said. "I turn over the most challenging and professionally rewarding assignment of my 30 years in the United States Navy."
This was the second time Donegan has succeeded Wren in command. In 2004, he relieved Wren as commanding officer of USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70).
"Having seen his spectacular performance on Carl Vinson, I am confident that he will do great things with Battle Force 7th Fleet," said Wren. "I have no doubts about the future of this organization."
Donegan also served as executive officer on George Washington nearly ten years ago. During his time on board, the ship earned the Battle "E" and the Adm. Flatley Safety Award.
"I look forward to working from [George Washington] again to continue to strengthen our alliances and partnerships in the region of Japan," Donegan said.
