SANTA RITA, Guam (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Marianas announced Nov. 24 the award of the second increment of an $83 million firm-fixed price contract to IBC/TOA Corporation Joint Venture based in Barrigada, Guam.

The award of $43 million was obligated to complete expansion of Kilo Wharf, the ammunition wharf on U.S. Naval Base Guam.

"The extension is to accommodate the new T-AKE class of ammunition vessels, meet current seismic standards, and provide for containerized cargo operations with the installation of new crane rails," said Cmdr. Matthew Suess, executive officer for NAVFAC Marianas. "The expansion of Kilo Wharf is an example of the Navy's continued investment in Guam," he added.

The project is scheduled for completion in 2010, just in time to accommodate the Navy's new class of multipurpose dry cargo/ammunition ships scheduled to be in service that year.

Kilo Wharf, which was constructed in 1989, is the U.S. Department of Defense's only dedicated ammunition wharf in the Western Pacific. Upon completion of the project the wharf will double in size from 400 feet to 800 feet.
