SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) held a change of command ceremony at Naval Base San Diego Nov. 7.

Cmdr. Sam R. Hancock Jr. relieved Cmdr. Christopher K. Barnes as commanding officer.

During the ceremony, Barnes thanked many of the senior officers in attendance for their mentoring. He also thanked his wardroom, chief petty officers' mess, and crew for their hard work and dedication to mission accomplishment.

Capt. Troy Stoner, commander, Destroyer Squadron 23, praised Barnes for his remarkable performance as commanding officer and presented him with the Meritorious Service Medal followed by the traditional presentation of the ship's command pennant by Command Master Chief (SW) Karol Kramer.

Barnes assumed command of John Paul Jones July 2007. During his tenure, he led the John Paul Jones through two successful Western Pacific deployments, living up to John Paul Jones' famous saying, "I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way."

Cmdr. Barnes' next assignment is with Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Rear Adm. John W. Miller, Commander Carrier Strike Group 11, and retired Rear Adm. Thomas McNamara from the John Paul Jones Association.
