Sri Lanka-Army-LTTE Stronghold
Sri Lankan troops made further inroads on Monday into Tiger strongholds capturing the strategic town of Mankulam just adjacent to their prized goal of Kilinochchi.
"The vital supply lines of the beleaguered Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres inside the Kilinochchi town have been snapped," All India Radio (AIR) reported quoting Sri Lankan military spokesman.
He said that government troops backed by fighter jets also seized Kumalamunai near the other strong LTTE base of Mulaitivu.
However, the Tigers claimed that they had beaten back an attempt by Lankan troops to breach the new LTTE defense line at Muhamalai in the Jaffna Peninsula killing 20 soldiers.
With the capture of the new town, the Sri Lankan forces have recaptured three strategic towns which have been under Tiger sway for over long.
