Germany urges boosting of Afghan military and police training

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Nov 11, IRNA
Germany-Military-Minister
German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung on Tuesday called for "strengthening efforts" to intensify the training of Afghan security forces.

Speaking at a security conference in Berlin, Jung reiterated the "objective" of the Afghan military training by western countries was for Afghans to eventually take control of their own security affairs .

He pointed out Afghan security forces were already ensuring the security of Kabul and were expected to widen that control to the outskirts of the Afghan capital next year.

Jung said there are currently 184 police instructors in Afghanistan as part of the European Union EUPOL police mission which was launched last year.

Germany has led the Afghan police rebuilding process since 2002 and dozens of German military police officers have been involved in instructing Afghan police officers.

The German defense minister warned of the worsening security situation in Afghanistan, referring to a number of recent devastating suicide attacks by the radical Taliban militia and al-Qaeda.
