KEYPORT, Wash. (NNS) -- USS Ohio (SSGN 726) (Blue) held a change of command ceremony at the Naval Undersea Warfare Museum in Keyport Nov. 6.
Capt. Murray Gero Jr. relieved Capt. Christopher Ratliff as commanding officer of USS Ohio (SSGN 726) (Blue).
Rear Adm. D.J. McAneny, commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, the senior officer at the ceremony, commented on Ratliff's performance and leadership abilities.
"I owe your performance a debt of gratitude," said McAneny. "You led your team with great care and guidance, and left a mark upon this sub and its crew that will forever remain."
Prior to assuming command of Ohio, Ratliff commanded USS Georgia (SSBN 729) (Blue) during five strategic deterrent patrols August 2000 - 2003.
The change of command ceremony marked the end of his 25-month long term as commanding officer of Ohio.
During his speech Ratliff cited his crew for a job well done during deployment last year, the guided missile submarine's first deployment after an extensive overhaul period.
"I commanded the Ohio with high expectations," said Ratliff. "I have to say that it is the crew that made my time in command as great as it was. They do what they need to do on and off the ship. They conduct themselves accordingly, are great ambassadors to the United States when in foreign ports."
With the reading of his orders, the role of commanding officer was officially passed on to Gero.
"It is almost a shame to see the ending of the previous legacy of professional excellence," said Gero.
"However, it provides a great opportunity for me to continue that legacy and, at the same time, start one of my own."
