ATSUGI, Japan (NNS) -- Effective Oct. 1 the Naval Air Pacific Repair Activity (NAPRA) headquartered in Atsugi, Japan, became the 7th Fleet Readiness Center, Fleet Readiness Center Western Pacific (FRCWP).

The Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) decision of 2005 directed the creation of Commander, Fleet Readiness Center (COMFRC) and the realignment of all U.S.-based naval aviation depots and aircraft intermediate maintenance detachments into six fleet readiness centers (FRC): FRC East, FRC Mid-Atlantic, FRC Northwest, FRC Southeast, FRC Southwest and FRC West.

FRCWP reports to COMFRC while still retaining its direct ties to Naval Air System Command (NAVAIR).

FRCWP originated in the mid-1950's as a division of Commander Fleet Air, Western Pacific. Known as the Fleet Air Western Pacific Rework Activity (FAWPRA), it was responsible for depot aircraft repair in theater for more than 30 years and had detachments in Korea, New Zealand, Philippines and Singapore. During the Vietnam conflict, FAWPRA was crucial to the readiness of Western Pacific forces by quickly returning battle-damaged aircraft to duty.

On Oct. 1, 1989, FAWPRA shifted claimancy from Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet to Commander, Naval Air Systems Command as an echelon 3 command. Initially designated as Naval Aviation Repair Facilities Pacific, the organization was finally designated as NAPRA by OPNAVNOTE 5450 of 7 May 1990. Over the years NAPRA's responsibilities have evolved to cover depot-level maintenance for Navy and Marine Corps aircraft, in-Service repairs, aircraft modifications, support equipment and components repairs for forward deployed forces in the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Gulf.

Today, FRCWP's approximately 200 personnel located at Atsugi, Australia, Korea, Okinawa, Guam, and Singapore continue to provide essential aviation depot services to fleet units ashore and afloat from the Northern Pacific westward to the Eastern United States.
